Description of Barra Fishing Charters

Licence Nº not provided

Barra fishing charters is run by Donald B MacLeod, who is a career fisherman and has spent most of his working career in charge of his own fishing trawler, even though he has taken part in most fishing types. The vessel used is a Lochin 33 Sports Fisherman named the BOY JAMES, built in 1986 and a length of 10.06m. The vessel is powered by 2 x 185 hp inboard Perkins 6.3544, which gives a cruising speed of 15kts. The Boy James is also fitted with up to date navigational equipment such as VHF’s, colour sounder, radar, autopilot, GPS, plotter, etc. The vessel also complies with MCA safety and licensing regulations, carrying all the necessary safety equipment required. This includes lifejackets, life vests, lifebuoys, fire extinguishers, etc. The vessel is licensed to carry up to 12 people.

We specialize in fishing trips for a number of species such as mackerel, pollack, coley, saithe and many other types, all dependent of the time of year. Just ask and we will let you know what you are likely to catch. Rods and bait will be provided free of charge.

Wild-life spotting trips can also be arranged to see the various species in the area, such as seal colonies, shags, cormorants, gannets, basking sharks, dolphins, to name but a few.

Trips to neighbouring islands are also a very popular choice when visiting Barra, with the most common island being Mingulay with it's magnificant sea-cliffs and bird colonies, on a calm day it is possible to sail through the natural arch on the west side of Mingulay, we have found that this is one of the biggest highlights for our passengers. Other favourite islands are Barra Head (the most southerly point of the Outer Hebrides) and Pabbay. Specific trips to other islands or a series of islands can be done on arrangement.

Private charters can also be arranged with Barra Fishing Charters. This includes sea-angling for specific arrangements, trips to neighbouring islands or a mixture of all that we offer.
Barra fishing charters also have self-catering accommodation available. Other types of accommodation can also be booked by us, such as hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts. Just ask when inquiring about a charter.
