How does laser tag work outdoors?

As far as I was concerned, I thought that laser tag was an activity that had to be practised in the dark in order to see the lasers (which I thought was part of the fun). I have lately started to see what look like paintball venues that offer laser tag and I can´t help but think that part of the fun...
