Welcome to Bigland Hall Equestrian

We are a horse riding school located in Backbarrow. We offer lessons that are suitable for anyone and all ages. We teach all year round and in our excellent indoor arena, so we can give lessons whatever the weather. We offer both group and private lessons, and classic dressage lessons for medium to advanced riders. We have a pony club that connects children with ponies for a ride, petting, or grooming.

We also offer trekking lessons and hacking, including full day, half day, and two hour-long hacks in different locations. We even do group rides on the beach. We also host a BHS riding club. For more information see below. 

Activities we offer include:

Beginner Rides

• Lead Rein Ride. This ride is suitable for anyone of any age from 4 years old to 94 years old! It's great for those that have never ridden before or still want a little help from someone on the ground.
• Estate Ride. This ride is great for those that are more experienced. You will be accompanied on the ride but instructors are also mounted so you need to be comfortable controlling the horse by yourself.

Hacking

• 2 hour Fell Ride. This is a ride out which takes you over Bigland Fells and through some stunning Lake District countryside. As there are several opportunities to canter in the open fields, this ride is not suitable for beginners and is better suited to the more experienced rider.
• 3 hour Fell Ride This is a longer Fell Ride for the more advanced and adventurous riders, which goes over more challenging terrain and provides more opportunities to canter.

Full Day Ride

• Hampsfell Day Ride. This ride gives fantastic opportunities to canter and stunning views of Morecambe Bay. The day will include a lunch stop at a local pub. You must be able to canter in an open environment and have plenty of experience riding out.
• Winster Valley Day Ride. This ride will also offer plenty of canters through open fields. You will also enjoy some challenging terrain and fantastic views. There will be a lunch break in a local pub in a  nice, small village.

Riding Holidays

Our riding holidays include the Coniston Trail (2-3 days), The Lakes Trail (5 days), and the Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth Trail (6 Days). Different trails suit different levels of riders, so please contact us for more information.

Lessons

We offer lessons for everyone, from beginners to advanced riders. Lessons are available all year round in our indoor 20 x 40 arena and include Jumping, Dressage, Cross-country and Flatwork lessons, all with our qualified staff.

Pony Club 

Our Pony Club is available to anyone aged 4-16. It runs every Saturday from 1-4pm and will give you the chance to care for horses in a natural, safe environment, and enjoy lessons and treks out with our approved instructors.

BHS Accredited Riding Club

Riding Club lessons are once a fortnight.
