Premises- We are the ONLY school in the South East of England at Camber Sands to have a centre located ON the beach, every other school has to travel to the beach and are located up to an hour and a half away, or have no location at all and just work from a van. Having premises at Camber is a massive advantage for several reasons. We have on-site classroom for theory lessons out of the elements, changing rooms, secure storage, free parking, shop and all equipment on-site. So rather than getting changed in the cold car parks and learning theory out of the boot of a vehicle, we can hide away in the warm with a white board and seating. We also have all the equipment necessary on-site if the conditions change or something doesn’t quite fit properly, rather than having to cancel the lessons. The centre offers a nice relaxed atmosphere where we can enjoy the sofa’s during the brief and debrief, chat amongst friends and other participants and look through all the latest toys we have in the shop. Those bringing partners or friends can relax on our roof top decking and watch the lessons on the beach. Most schools do not have any premises at all, yet alone on the most popular beach on the south coast.
Best wind conditions - We didn’t choose our location by accident! Camber Sands is the most popular beach for kite sports in the South for several reasons. We are on a peninsular and for this reason, the beach offers the best wind stats in the summer months than anywhere along the whole of the south and east coast. During this period we can run lessons almost every single day. The wind is constant as it comes straight from the sea as it funnels up the channel from the Atlantic and is rarely too strong. We also experience incredible thermal / sea breezes because of our location meaning we can often run lessons even if there is no wind forecast as it comes through in the afternoons from local effects. It’s highly advantageous for lessons because we rarely have to cancel half way through an re-schedule so you can complete your course and not have to rebook and waste money on accommodation.
Best Beaches for any wind direction – Unlike any other area in the south, we have two amazing beaches within 10 minutes of each other, Camber Sands and Greatstone / Littlestone. We predominantly receive wind coming from the South West, which blows onto the beach at Camber making it ideal for lessons, however, 20% of the time it comes from the North East, the exact opposite and blows off the beach at Camber making it unusable for lessons. Usually the lesson would have to be cancelled but we can move to the otherside of the peninsular and use Greatstone beach where it is blowing onto the beach again making it safe and useable. When kiting, the wind has to blow onto the beach otherwise it is very dangerous and you can be blown out to sea so having two beaches which can cater for both the wind directions is very useful.
Safety concious – Whilst teaching, safety is our primary concern closely followed by having fun! We have comprehensive risk assessments updated regularly and full instructor training. Having a teaching area to ourselves greatly improves safety and removes the possibility of collisions. We use the latest safety equipment and everyone will be given helmets, buoyancy aids, wetsuits and harnesses. It is compulsory to wear these in a lesson. We will never run lessons if we think the safety of our students could be compromised.
Experiences instructors- Unlike a lot of other schools who claim they ‘have the most experienced instructors because we have been established for years‘ but then employ almost complete novices, our school and lessons are run by the owners and a selection of highly trained and experienced instructors with thousands and thousands of hours teaching experience. Teaching kitesurfing can’t be done from a book, it is a skill developed over years as each individual is different and you have to cater for that. So if is explaining to the student they need more weight on the back foot during board starts or ways to understand the wind window and power zones, we have the instructors for it. We have worked for and run several of the other local schools in previous years so using this knowledge have developed a school to offer the best possible lessons.
Local knowledge- The Kitesurf Centre is the only school with a dedicated teaching area at Camber Sands, this is not open to other kitesurfers so rather than always worrying about other water users around you, we have plenty of space to ourselves. As mentioned above, we have been teaching for years but prior to this we were beach life guards at Camber, so from experience we can read the conditions very well and decide which beach or area of the beach will offer the best conditions for learning in on any given day. We are fortunate to know of a couple of local ’secret spots’, in the right conditions we use these for lessons due to the perfect uncrowded environment they offer.
Fully operational abundance of brand new kit – Having to cancel lessons because of broken or faulty kit is very fustrating and time wasting, so to avoid this we have loads of kit to fit every size from XXS to XXXL and anything in between. Rather than having the bare minimum we have excess so if anything breaks or doesn’t fit we have plenty of spares, this is also helpful if it is cold because we can put you two layers to keep warm. We upgrade our kites every 6-8 weeks so constantly have new fully operational kit with the best safety systems, click here to see what we use.
Hire equipment- At the end of your lesson you may wish to continue on your own for a few days before taking the plunge and buying your own gear. This is a service we pride ourselves on. We offer all of the kitesurfing equipment, as well as wetsuits, harnesses, buoyancy aid and helmets. We have a huge range of equipment so we can cater for everybody.
Easy access - Camber Sands is the closest kitesurfing beach to Central London. We are just 40 miles from South London and easily accessible by train, car or even bus. The local infrastructure is very good and travelling is made easy. If you do travel by train we will even collect you from Rye train station and bring you to the beach! The car park is free and secure.
Full length courses- Although we advertise our courses with time frames, we know delays occur and lessons often overun because we are thorough, safety concious and understand kitesurfing can be difficult, so rather than finishing on time as most will do, we make sure the lessons are completed rather than stopping when the time has elasped.
Courses to suit you – As you can see from our courses page, we offer a huge variety of courses and also run private tuition and board control clinics at the weekends rather than just 1, 2 and 3 day courses. If you feel there isn’t a course for you on our menu, give us a call and we will set it up!
On-site shop- So you have got on really well in your lesson and are totally addicted already, or perhaps you have hired for a few hours and feel the sport really is for you? We have all the equipment you need on site, from wetsuit boots to kitesurfing kites. We have a full range of sizes which you can try on and occasionally the option of ex demo or second hand gear.
Excellent riders- The riding level for an instructor qualification is not actually very high because for teaching beginner courses the way in which you teach is far more important, however, for more advanced lessons and coaching clinics, you need an instructor who can ride! Amongst our instructors is a calvalary of pro riders, one of which finished in 2nd place in the British Tour last year. Being able to perform the tricks is very helpful for demonstrations but having the experience of learning them ourselves, we can help you overcome similar obstacles that we encountered.
Local accomodation and entertainment for the family – Both Rye and Hastings are renowned areas for tourists and entertainment is in abundance for any age from Zoo’s to Smugglers Caves to Power boat rides. There is also a massive range of accomodation from self catered appartments to high class hotels. Rye Tourism offers a large selection for the whole area.
Experienced trustworthy advice – If you are interested in a course, purchasing equipment or just want to know what the conditions are looking like on the beach today, give us a call, we aren’t salesman, we are kitesurfers!
Happy previous customers – We take pride in the feedback we receive from previous students, you can view some of it on the blog we created for posting comments and thoughts.
Group and student discounts – We offer discounts for students and groups over 3 people, please contact us for details.
Most competitive pricing – Price match, if you a better price, we will match it.
