Discovery Surf School provides professional coaching for all ages and levels, from absolute beginners to experienced surfers. With an emphasis on quality coaching in small groups, to provide plenty of tuition, also specialising in on-going coaching to improve quickly.

Discovery Surf School is run by Martin Connolly. Martin is a top rated British surfer and experienced BSA coach and lifeguard; working several seasons on local and Australian beaches.

Discovery Surf School coaches are all highly experienced BSA surf coaches, first aiders, beach lifeguards and very experienced with local surf/beaches.

Surf Lessons/courses are in groups with other pupils of the same level. The maximun ratio of coaches to pupils in the water is 1 to 6. School/youth groups 1 to 8 max.

Discovery Surf School was established in 2002, based in Plymouth. Lessons are available all year round, and cater for all ages and abilities.

Discovery Surf School has proven popular for all ages with locals, tourists, Hen & Stag parties, corporate groups, schools and students alike.
There has been a steady increase in the number of girl and women pupils – now regularly out numbering guys in a group!

Lessons and Courses

Beginner Lesson
This 2 hour lesson provides an introduction into surfing; including important information on beach safety and basic surfing knowledge.

You'll be catching waves, standing up and feeling 'stoked'! Age 6 upwards

Beginner Courses
With a beginner course you’ll learn the essential’s, and also start developing your own surfing style as you learn more, practice and progress in the lesson.

Supervised Practice Session
This 2 hour surf is for practicing what you have learnt on our courses. You will still be under the watchful eye of our coaches to ensure your safety. You do need to have a a certain level of surf safety awarness for this session, which is decided under the discretion of your coach.

Improver Lesson
This lesson is perfect for someone who has already been on a beginner course or a novice looking for some helpful tips.
With an improver lesson you can take your surfing to the next level; learn about how to ride unbroken waves, surf etiquette, surfing 'out the back', suitable equipment for yourself; about surf conditions and generally improve your surfing skills in a safe and fun environment. These are ideal for when you have completed a course and have also been out practicing.

Junior Surfer Scheme
Includes BSA Young Athlete log book and certificate –a British Surfing Association course, tick off your logbook outlining your surfing achievements after every surf lesson. And at the end of your course, your Discovery Surf School coach will award you with your National Surfing Award (level 1 to 5).
Your course logbook is an ongoing scheme, so every future lesson you can add to your achievements and aim to complete the Scheme.

Advanced Surf Lesson
These lessons are for surfers who are surfing regularly and have developed their surfing and confidence in the water over a number of years. For example working on cutbacks, floaters or making bigger/steeper waves. Video anaylsis of your surfing is used to help explain coaching tips, using the surf schools water video or land based video camera's.

Private Surf Lesson
With this lesson you'll have your own private coach for approximately 2 hours.
