Description of Ballooning Adventures

You're in safe hands...

Ballooning Adventures has over 20 years experience of flying passengers over the beautiful Northumberland, Durham and Borders countryside. In addition to the excellent equipment we operate, we pride ourselves on only employing the most experienced and qualified pilots and support crew.

Our pilots have full Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Commercial Balloon Licenses and are all qualified instructors. They are subject to a rigorous annual test of their flying skill.

Our Chief Pilot is Mike Forster who is:

  • A former RAF pilot
  • A CAA appointed Examiner for the award and renewal of balloon licences.

Mike is also the holder of the British Long Distance Record for a balloon flight and has competed in numerous balloon competitions both in the UK and abroad.

In addition, Mike represented England in the 2002 America’s Challenge  and was voted Pilot of the Year in 2000 by the British Balloon & Airship Club (which is affiliated to the Royal Aero Club). This is an annual award made to the pilot who has given the most convincing demonstration of flying skill.

Your Balloon Flight. An exhilarating experience with Ballooning Adventures.

The romance and excitement of ballooning is unsurpassed by any other form of flying. Your flight, lasting approximately one hour will enable you to see the the stunning countryside of Northern England and southern Scotland from a new and exhilarating perspective.

The ease with which we gently lift into the sky and float along, creates a remarkable feeling of freedom and tranquillity.

Balloon flights take place shortly after dawn and a few hours before dusk, when the air is stable and the winds at their lightest. As for the time of year - the choice is yours! Each season has its own special characteristics; crisp, clear winter mornings are as magical as balmy summer evenings.

Learn to fly your own balloon

You can learn to be a hot air balloon pilot with Ballooning Adventures. Training can be completed in less than three months, subject to the availability of the student and the vagaries of the British weather!

Ballooning Adventures has among its pilots, qualified instructors and our Chief Pilot is also a Civil Aviation Authority appointed examiner so we are able to provide all training and examining in-house.

Balloons are registered aircraft and are therefore subject to similar controls and regulations as fixed wing or rotary aircraft. The regulatory body in the UK is the Civil Aviation Authority.

In order to fly a balloon for pleasure and sports purposes the pilot must possess a Private Pilots Licence (PPL). The carriage of fare paying passengers requires a Commercial Licence (CPL). To gain a PPL, a student pilot must undergo approximately 20 hours practical training at the controls of a balloon, together with ground school studies covering the following areas:

  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Aviation Law
  • Airmanship & Ballooning Systems
  • Human Performance
