This was our first trial of cruising in a narrowboat other than as a short trip when part of a group. We had a long weekend family break mostly on the Bridgewater Canal.
Our party comprised two of us over 65, two in their 30s and their three children; 6, 5 and 18 months. We found that we learned very quickly what we could and couldn't do with a 60+ feet long boat! Some of the other, more regular canal users were quite abusive but, in the vast majority of cases very friendly and helpful.
The instructions given us by Danny at Coleman's were detailed and excellent and covered everything we needed to know apart from where, on the canals, there are places wide enough to turn around and return - although he did show us clearly how to do it when we found a place. We will definitely be on the canals again and, if possible, with the same boats.
