We hire out watersports equipment from Kempston Outdoor Centre. We’re right on the south bank of the Great Ouse. In this 1 hour hire offer, you can choose to paddle upstream or head towards the centre of Bedford.
It’s easy to use a kayak, so you don’t need a guide. In fact, the whole family can get involved because the minimum age is 10 years old (accompanied by at least one person who’s over 21). This option is also very popular among couples and groups of friends.
We have both sit-on-top and enclosed kayaks available. We’ll also give you a paddle, a dry bag and a life jacket. One of our guides will help you get set up and give you an easy-to-use map.

When your activity starts and finishes
You can rent our equipment any day of the week from March to November at the following times: 11:00 am, 12:15 pm, 1:30 pm and 2:45 pm.

Have you ever been kayaking?Then we suspect you’re eager to do it again. If not, let this be your first time! We’re open for kayak hire on the Great Ouse, operating at Kempston Outdoor Centre in Bedford.
You can choose an enclosed or sit-on-top kayak. Both types are easy to use and suitable for beginners. When you hire one of our craft, you also get a life jacket and a dry bag - we won’t leave you without a paddle either!
This half-day session gives you about 2 hours on the water. We will provide you with a map which shows the suggested route: gliding downstream to the city centre, then paddling back.
The water is calm, the banks are lined with vegetation, and there are birds and other animals to spot. It’s a treat for everyone, and our kayaks can be used by teens (over 12 years old) and adults. There should be an adult of at least 21 years of age in the group.
