Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre

This historic building, since it was built in 1863 has been used in the service of improving the lives of children from its original use as an orphanage nearly 150 years ago.

Social improvements meant that the orphanage was closed and the inception of Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre in 1995 when it became a centre for outdoor activities for schools and youth groups as well as members of the community.

Canoes provide a more stable alternative to kayaking and can take two to three people at a time, or two people and a nice picnic.

The real challenge with canoeing comes from the degree of teamwork involved as you have to work in unison to avoid travelling in circles all day long! With our fleet of Laser Pico, Wayfarer and Topper dinghies our fully qualified instructors will deliver sailing courses from the Royal Yachting Association to give you comprehensive training in sailing so you can leave the land behind as you discover adventure on the sea.

An indoor adventure that takes place in nature, Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre Caving brings you a thrilling adventure back in time millions of years through ancient caving systems.

Whether it is the Pridhamsleigh caverns or Baker's Pit near Buckfastleigh, conditions are warm and mostly dry the whole year round. Our instructors have a wealth of experience exploring these caves and as such have no problems tailoring a great adventure for you and your group through these amazing locations.

We will supply you with a miner's helmet and coveralls as you will definitely get a bit muddy as you squeeze, crawl, climb and slide through this underground adventure wonderland.

From our home base we take a short walk to the beautiful Berry Head, and look down into a 25 metre drop down a disused quarry. From here our fully qualified instructors will set up abseiling lines and instruct everyone one on the safety aspects and correct abseiling techniques before hooking you into your harness and encouraging you over the edge!

From here you will have total control as you shuffle, walk and bound down the rockface, and the feeling you get when you feet touch the ground and you know you have bested the challenge and yourself will leave a smile on your face while making you want to do it all over again!

Orienteering, or as it is otherwise knows, "thinking man's race" requires not only speed, but also the correct utilization of navigation and teamwork as you work out the best way to get from the different checkpoints that make up the race course all the way to the finish line.

We can set up a tailor made course specifically designed with your groups level of experience and abilities as well as offering comprehensive training in how to correctly use a map and compass and plan out routes, from here it's up to you to work together to get to where you are going. Our most iconic and popular adventure here at the adventure centre offers a great activity that individuals and groups both take a great deal from.
