The general view of caving is one of danger – you’re exploring the depths of the Earth where light doesn’t reach, where a cave in could happen at any moment and you’ll be trapped forever. Well this couldn’t be any further from the truth. These certain preconceptions do not reflect the reality and rewards of this extreme sport, where you adventure with specialist equipment and a professional guide in a safe environment, enjoying all the natural wonders the Earth has to offer below. If you want to go on an adventure that involves climbing, diving, and scrambling, then caving is for you! Here are our top 5 reasons why you should try caving in the UK.
1. Immerse yourself in a new environment

Caves are the results of thousands upon thousands of years of evolution, with unique biological habitats and internal architecture that you can’t see anywhere else on the planet. From soda straws to stalactites and stalagmites, when you go caving you’ll immerse yourself in an environment that is totally alien to what you’re used to – and incredibly mesmerising.
2. There’s no experience like it

Whilst seeing this vast underground world in photos and through David Attenborough documentaries is beautiful in and of itself, actually experiencing it first hand is encapsulating. The views you’ll experience are so much more amazing not just because you are there, but because you worked so hard to get there. You earned that view, a view that most people will never see in their lives, and that experience is totally unique to caving.
3. An adrenaline-fuelled adventure

Caving is a sport that is full of adrenaline. Just upon entering the cave itself you’ll feel a surge of endorphins come over you as you anticipate the adventure that’s ahead – staring into the dark abyss for the first time is guaranteed to satisfy even the hardiest of thrill seekers. And once you start descending, it only gets better. Having to clear potential hazards before manoeuvring through the darkness provides an extreme adrenaline rush that is unmatched by anything in life; if you’re up for an underground journey, caving is definitely for you!
4. Push yourself to the extreme

Traversing the vast underground caverns requires a lot of skill and specialist equipment – all of which you’ll learn prior to your first journey. Once you’re ready to head below the surface, you’ll be pushed to your limits like never before; it involves tight spaces, muddy squalid holes and even diving. You’ll go from crawling on your belly through a tiny tunnel to abseiling down a cliff face, you’ll truly be pushed to the extremes – and the sense of achievement you’ll get after your first experience is absolutely unparalleled.
5. Explore

Caving will take you to a plethora of beautiful places beneath the UK. Some which are already hotspots for cavers, and some yet undiscovered. You first few caving expeditions will be like discovering a new world; traversing caverns, underground rivers and seeing beautiful crystal formations, but these caves are ones that have already been discovered. Why not graduate to exploration caving and visit places that no one has been to before. Caving allows you to truly be an explorer – imagine the privilege you’ll feel realising that your eyes have been the first cast upon those incredible crystals, or the thrill of truly not know what’s around the next corner. When should I go caving in the UK?

Caving is a sport that heavily relies on good weather conditions in order to have the safest, and best possible experience. Therefore, we would suggest going caving during the drier months when the weather conditions are more stable, namely during the seasons of late spring, summer and autumn. We would advise you to avoid caving on or around rainy days, as this could provide flooding hazards, and during the winter, unless you are an experienced caver. However, going during the recommended seasons would lead to an incredible experience!

Just returned from day's (50/50) caving and indoor (due to wet weather) climbing. Iain was a great instructor. Patient, very informative and well-humoured. The caving part was my favourite, inspiring me to return in the spring for a Level 2 course. Iain kindly supplied all the necessary kit and gave expert advice. He was hard-working and kept us enthused at all times. The afternoon was climbing indoors, due to bad weather, but an excellent opportunity to hone the skills we acquired! Thanks for a great time - we'll be back!!
