We are English Heritage, a charity that manages many of the most iconic historical sites in the country. Our goal is to allow the public, whether from this country or visiting from abroad, to step into these famous places and stand where the actors of history stood. We are also committed to protecting and preserving these unique sites and the landscapes they stand in for generations to come.
Our sites, which number over 400, tell the story of England from prehistoric times, through the Roman era, to the time of mediaeval castles and the following age of stately homes and manors. Our most famous is Stonehenge, an ancient monument comprising a huge circle of standing stones and many other archaeological sites in the surrounding area.
Other visitor favourites are Dover Castle in Kent, Tintagel Castle in Cornwall and parts of Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria and Northumberland. We also run the blue plaques scheme in London, commemorating the lives of famous residents of the capital in the places associated with them.
We have an active membership of over a million people who get free access to the best that England has to offer. But our outlook reaches beyond our borders. We work with partner organisations to offer our members reduced entry fees to fantastic properties and attractions in the other nations of the United Kingdom, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and New Zealand.
