The East Barnby Outdoor Centre is located in the stunning North York Moors National Park just a stone´s throw away from the Heritage Jurassic Coast and Whitby, East Barnby. We are an exceptional outdoor activity centre that provides outdoor adventure activities while focusing on educational and inspiring learning opportunities in each and every adventurer.

Our pricing is per group of up to 12 people and is £345 per group (price to Aug 2021)

East Barnby Outdoor Centre Kayaking offers kayaking for all adventurers looking to pick up a paddle and enjoy one of the best watersports out there. Our location in the North York Moors National Park means that we have the North York Moors, sea and the Jurassic Heritage coast close nearby that are perfect for unforgettable kayaking experiences.

Our instructors are BCU certified and experienced and they will teach you the skills and techniques you need in order to become and competent kayaker. We use a great method of games and activities to instruct making our sessions fun for everyone. We can accommodate groups of all sizes and ages and we can even plan a catered itinerary for your session.

Our variety of sessions/courses: 

• Kayaking for primary kids: Learn to take control of your own kayak. Along with teammates and fun challenges, the kids will achieve to learn to take rapid decisions on their own. 
• Kayaking for secondary groups: On this level, the kayaker will learn and practice to solve any problem that could appear on the rapids. 
• Kayaking for post 16: Here the kayaker will immerse in more risky and violent rapids. 
• Sea kayaking for teens and young adults: Let´s practice kayaking on the beautiful Yorkshire Coast.

Welcome to the East Barnby Outdoor Centre Mountain Biking! Our location in the North York Moors National Park is a brilliant area with its woodland and forest to discover on two wheels! Our venue is an outstanding outdoor educational venue whose main objective is providing the enriching and growing experiences for all those that come along and pay us a visit.

We offer our mountain bike journeys for secondary ages students and older and this experience will help riders develop skill and technique while giving them excellent terrain for practicing. If interested in gaining recognized qualifications, you may come along for various days of riding!

• Mountain Biking for Primary: In this course, the basic skills of mountain biking are introduced such as onsite riding and a combination of easy trails and tracks. 
• Mountain Biking for Secondary: Learn some new skills that allow the biker risky challenging terrain.
• Mountain Biking for post 16: New hills to climb. Also, you will be encouraged to make your own choices and take responsibility for your own liability.
• MIAS Level 1 and 2: This course is perfect for leaders that love mountain biking so much that wants to become a professional on it.

The East Barnby Outdoor Centre Climbing, based in the North York Moors National Park offers excellent indoor and outdoor climbing sessions either on our fabulous indoor climbing facilities or outdoors in the North York Moors, an absolute haven for rock climbers.

Our climbing adventures are suitable for all ages and levels. Starting off on our climbing wall, climbers can then advance naturally onto the natural crags of the area with the support and instruction of our qualified instructors. Climbers will learn the skills and techniques of climbing as well as gaining a good understanding of the hazards of climbing as well as the essential safety techniques.

We offer a range of different Climbing activities: 

• Indoor Climbing for Primary children, teens, and young adults: This is a great opportunity to enter the world of Climbing, develop knowledge and skills. 
• Rock Climbing for primary children, teens, and young adults: The young ones will face new challenges and achieve incredible heights. They can even go bouldering, no ropes! 
• Climbing Wall Award: Our qualified staff will give the certification of Mountain Training Climbing Wall Award.

East Barnby Outdoor Centre in Whitby, North Yorkshire also offers canoeing in addition to kayaking. Whether you fancy a leisurely paddle down our local River Esk or a taste of whitewater, we offer a range of paddle sports courses to suit your needs. The North York Moors National Park is the perfect place to do so, offering fun courses and a great outdoor environment.

We cater for all ages and abilities, including taster days, British Canoe Union Accredited awards and Coaching qualifications. Looking for something fun to do on the weekends or the afternoons? Come out and have a go. Whether you’re an avid canoer or beginner, we can be sure that we have options to suit your needs.

• Canoeing for primary children: Hopping in with your friends, you will get on the water and have a great adventure. While learning to paddle, we will throw some really fun games! 
• Canoeing for secondary: Learn to understand more restless water and to communicate with the canoeing partner.
• Canoeing for post 16: With this one, you can even paddle solo in a calm environment that can convert into a full challenge. 
• British Canoeing FSRT: Training course of practical safety - be able to deal with emergencies.

If you´ve always wanted to learn how to surf, now you can at East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre. Because the centre is based right on the coast, take advantage and learn this fun sport! You can use either body boards or learn on proper surfboards, learning fun new skills.

• Windsurfing for primary, secondary children and young adults: If you want a taste of the water sport and have a great day, we assure you that this is a great way to enjoy it and the outdoors. Regardless of your skill levels or swimming ability, this is a great way to gain some confidence in the sea. 
• Windsurfing, Starting Out: A course for complete little beginners.
• Youth Windsurfing Levels 1, 2, 3: From an introductory to a steady progression, you will learn and dominate skills like, control the wind, gybing and talking.

Abseiling is a great sport, especially when you do it outdoors. It can be combined with rock climbing, or just done on its own. East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre has some great places to do this sport, and it also offers some classes on its Adult Interest and Leader Training courses.

• An Introduction to Climbing – Runs over two days during the Summer.

If you like the idea of high ropes but are scared of the height involved, East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre has a great low ropes course as an alternative.  Because the group has to work together on the course, solving problems and activities along the way, the course is aimed at developing communication skills, enhance cooperation skills and lead to good teamwork.

Orienteering is a great activity for a group to do together, as it is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Take advantage of all the great scenery in East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre and take a group out Orienteering. It´s a great activity for building communication skills, as well as encouraging teamwork. There are also some orienteering courses that adults can take, such as;

If you´ve always wanted to do some canyoning but were hesitant as it seemed a bit much, why not try a Beck Scramble with East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre? The Beck scramble can be as hard or as easy as needed and is great for a team building exercise.

During the Beck Scramble, you and your group will be squeezing through holes, crossing rivers, scrambling over rocks and more, while completing team and personal challenges. A great activity for all skill levels and ages.

• Caving for Primary children: You will explore, find passages and look for a way to return to the surface - all with a legit headtorch.
• Caving for secondary: At this level, you will encounter stalagmites, different types of calcite formations whilst exploring more vast and distant parts of the cave. 
• Caving for post 16: Using a single rope, even leading trips of your own, you will explore some parts of the beautiful and fascinating Yorkshire Dales.

Hiking is a great activity for a group to do together, as it is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Take advantage of all the great scenery in East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre and take a group out hiking. There are also some hiking courses that you can take, such as;

• Countryside Leader Award – 15th – 16th June 
• Walking Group Leader Training – 3rd – 6th October 
• Walking Group Leader Assessment- 3rd-6th October 

However, if you´re desire is just to navigate the mountains, they are different groups for each age and skills - Hill Walking for Primary, Secondary and Post 16.

If you´ve always wanted to do some powerboating courses, now you can at East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre. Learning how to use a powerboat effectively helps you to be safer and more effective when driving one. East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre offers several courses on request on their Adult courses;

• RYA Powerboat Instructors Award Pre-Assessment
• RYA Safety Boat (Inland)
• RYA Powerboat Level 1: This course will cover launching and recovery, boat handling, preparation of boat and crew, leaving and coming alongside, picking up and being towed. 
• RYA Powerboat Level 2 (Inland): Knowing already the skills from Level 1, add anchoring and Man overboard.
